Is it possible to learn how to play the Flamenco Guitar
at the age of 64? In this diary I’m about to find out—and hopefully, over time…

…I will eventually grow closer to this abstract hero of mine!
(This is a postcard I bought when I studied in Spain 1985. It has been with me ever since, symbolizing the confidence and the wonderful vanity of a a full-fledged guitar virtuoso.)

There are a lot of sites out there, not to mention all the YouTube clips, where professional flamenco guitarists give you expert advice. Professionals, who have college degrees or have been born into flamenco families—or simply have been playing flamenco for decades.

So why a site by someone who doesn’t know anything at all about flamenco? Well, this site has a different angle—it’s about learning flamenco. Not only how to play the flamenco guitar—even if there will be a natural focus on mastering different techniques in the beginning—but to learn to understand flamenco and its different palos, its different forms of singing and dancing. Ultimately—and hopefully—also learning the flamenco vocabulary and understanding what the singing is all about. Which means learning Spanish. Which is another story…

To my help—apart from all those YouTube clips—I have Kai Narezo and his great site Flamenco Explained. Plus a lot of time and a stubborn mind. Now only time will tell if I’ll reach my goal of, as a hobby guitarist, being able to participate in a tablao, accompanying singers and dancers—and make a half-decent solo between sets—before I turn 70. Which will be in February 2029. Lots of time, or…?
